On Channel 8 and its lousy lousy storylines

I do not usually watch TV, and especially not local TV after SBC gave way to TCS and subsequently Mediacorp.

I do, however, traipse past the living room often enough to catch snippets of the silly plots Channel 8 has been coming up with. Behold, the list of storylines that are just too dramatised to be real.

The Keppel Show and its Bleach White Overalls

Not too long ago, there was this drama based on the Keppel Shipyard where Christopher Lee acted as “Iceman”, the unfeeling boss whose hair turned white overnight due to some emotional trauma. I can forgive the white hair for its sort of cool factor.

As with most successful dramas, you must have some pretty female leads to hold up the fort. So there is a bevy of female engineers, together Christopher Lee and a group of fresh young men who wander about the shipyard in bleach white coveralls, doing very manly stuff, supposedly.

Very cool plot, I guess, perhaps they were trying to emulate the girl power theme in Tomb Raider or something, except that Angelina Jolie is just plain hot, and the graphics were awesome, and at least the producers were honest about it being a complete farce of a story. Channel 8, on the other hand, tries hard to produce heartlander, real life storyline shows, which somehow never turn out quite very believable.

Any self respecting engineer will tell you that coveralls are NEVER white, not after the first wear anyway, and certainly not if you do any real work at all. I own 4 sets of overalls like those Keppel ones, and they’re easily the filthiest things I have in my possession. After a long day at work in overalls, my overalls are soaked in a hot tub with plenty of detergent, SEVERAL times, and never with any other clothes. Even after that, they’re never completely clean. Oil stains, mud and bleach marks, the occasional hole and worn off fabric are all in a day’s work. Pure white overalls huh. Pooh.
